Until the late 1990s figure skaters were tested on and their competitive levels were determined by their compulsory school figures. This discipline involved balance, extraordinary edge control, and attention to the finest details of the skate blade. Figure skaters traditionally spent hours of training each day learning to master their edges, pushes, turns, and body alignment. It is for this reason, not their jumping and spinning abilities, that they are considered the technical skating experts.
